Miss E.M.A. Savage was Samuel Butler's closest women friend and he consulted her freely about his books, sending everything he wrote for her approval - he preserverd her letters and a nuber of his own to her which he edited for publication but died before they were published. A reading copy only as front endpaper has been removed. Rear endpaper has some pencil annotation. Dustwrapper is tatty with wear and tear and area of loss to front cover. 580 pages including index. Cutting of a picture by Butler has been pasted to verso of rear endpaper.
