Red cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. viii + 646 pages. There is some rubbing to the back cover near the spine. The spine has darkened and is splitting/freying to the ends and where the rear cover meets the rear board. Small marks to front cover. Some minor foxing. 8 b/w illustrations. Tissue protected frontis of George Eliot. Marginalia. Inscription in back of book reads 'George Eliot - Those who knew her only from her books have but a faint idea of her character. Elle etait pus femme, & had more feminine qualities than almost anyone that I have ever known. She was so kind and good & so free from jealousy of all sorts; Very religious without definitive belief & with a sad humour & sense of humour which was very singular & attractive." Jowitt Life 1872. There is then a clipping pasted in from the Morning Post Wed 8.3.1899 a small obituary about the death of Sara Hennell who was a close friend of George Eliot and whose correspondence is included throughout the book. The piece and obituary were read aloud at Forest Hill in Jan 1888.
