Pablo Oroya, a painter visiting his wife Ines in hospital, finds himself in a wrong room, where another patient lies in an advanced stage of cancer. Next morning, the staff discover that this patient has been healed. Shortly after, Dr John Sparling, a leading consultant at the hospital, is told that he himself is mortally ill with Hodgkin's Disease. Against the violent opposition of his wife, herself a doctor, he goes out to Crete, where the Oroyas live, in the hope that Pablo may perform another miraculous cure. But soon after his arrival there, John and Ines fall in love: how can he ask Pablo to help him now? The painter's fierce dislike for any publicising of his strange gift; the scepticism of the hospital staff about 'faith-healing'; John Sparling's reactions to the sentence of death which has been passed on him; the idyll in Crete under the shadow of death - all these go to make an enthralling and most uncommon story. Internally clean hardback with some odd spotting to page edges, light stain marks to cover and sunning to spine - 254 pages. Next post dispatch.
